Barefoot & On Island Time

Peaceful

Our Unforgettable Week in Caye Caulker

If you ever need a reminder to slow down, just head to a place where the official town motto is literally "Go Slow."

That’s exactly what my nephew Brian, his girlfriend Nadia, and I did for a spectacular week-long getaway. We traded the fast-paced rush of the States for the unhurried, sun-drenched streets of Caye Caulker, Belize—and it didn't take long for us to completely fall under the island's spell.

Here is a look back at our ultimate week in paradise.

Getting There is Half the Fun!

Our adventure started the moment we touched down in Belize from the States. But you don't just "arrive" at Caye Caulker; you transition into it. We hopped onto a boat from the mainland, watching the city skyline fade away as the water turned an impossibly vibrant shade of neon turquoise.

By the time the boat pulled up to the island's wooden docks, the salt air had already washed away our travel fatigue. We checked into our motel, threw our bags down, kicked off our shoes, and immediately adapted to the local lifestyle.

Life in the Slow Lane (Literally).

One of the best things about Caye Caulker is the complete absence of cars. The streets are made of soft sand, and the traffic jams consist entirely of bicycles and iguanas.

For the week, our trusty steed was a "golf cart". Flying down the sandy lanes with the breeze in our faces became one of our favorite parts of the daily routine. Brian, Nadia, and I used it to scope out every square inch of the island, tracking down local hidden gems, open-air fruit stands, and the best breakfast spots.

Sunsets, Overwater Decks, and "The Split".

Most of our afternoons naturally centered around "The Split". The famous narrow channel that divides the northern and southern halves of the island. It’s essentially a massive, natural, crystal-clear swimming pool surrounded by a concrete seawall.

Our routine was simple but perfect:

Fresh Coconut Treats: We’d grab fresh, cold coconuts right out of the shell from the local street vendors passing by the seawall.
Overwater Hanging: We spent hours out on the wooden overwater restaurant decks connected to the beach by long walkways. Standing over the water, looking straight down into the passing currents while sharing a meal, was pure magic.
The Evening Ritual: Every single evening, we’d watch the sky turn brilliant shades of orange and purple over the western side of the island.

The Verdict.

Spending a full week allowed us to do something rare: absolutely nothing, elegantly. We didn't just visit Caye Caulker; we actually lived on island time.

Between the golf cart cruises, the stunning overwater views, and just laughing and relaxing together, it was a trip Brian, Nadia, and I won't ever forget. If you haven't been to this slice of Belizean paradise yet, take it from us—pack a bag, leave your shoes behind, and just "go slow".

Later, looking back at my Secret Beach photo set, I realized those shots were probably from a side trip to Secret Beach on Ambergris Caye near San Pedro — same Belize adventure, same Brian and Nadia, just another beautiful chapter.
